Iowa Fruits Star in State Fair Dessert Contest

The best of Iowa’s orchards were the star ingredients in the Cooking with Iowa Fruits and Vegetables competition, judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Joyce Larson of New Market won First Place Overall with Iowa Farm Fresh Cherry Pie.
Larson’s cherry pie also won first place in the Pie class. Shelby McCreedy of Atlantic took second place, and Lana Ross of Indianola claimed third place.
Diane Caron-Smith of Winterset won first place in the Desserts Other than Pies class. Pamela Cooper of Mount Ayr claimed second place, and Robert Morris of Des Moines earned third place.
Entries were judged on taste, appearance and best use of Iowa fruits and vegetables.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
