Rod Zeitler of Iowa City recorded a clean sweep of the top prizes in the C&H Canned Preserves competition judged Tuesday, August 7, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Zeitler’s Yellow Tomato Preserves won First Place Overall. His Peach Preserves and Cherry Preserves claimed Second and Third Places Overall, respectively.
Zeitler also claimed Sweepstakes honors while Kaye Rupprecht of Beacon earned the Reserve Sweepstakes award.
A preserve is a small whole fruit or uniformly sized medium-large pieces of fruit in clear, heavy and slightly jellied syrup. Preserves contain plump, tender fruits.
Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
