August 20, 2011
High Risk Unit of Cedar Rapids out-paced the competition to win the 8th Annual Outhouse Races Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. The team, comprised of Susan Fabian, Justin Wheatley, Mike Skaggs, Gabe Shappaveld and Amy Wheatley, took home the much-sought-after trophy and golden toilet seat after besting the competition in both style and speed.
Afton Care Center Dribblers, comprised of Mollie Kruse, Dustin Houghton, Erin Houghton and Tray Wade, all of Afton, placed second and claimed the silver plunger.
Third place and the bronze plunger went to Team DMACC of Des Moines. Members included Keith Wersinger, Melody Riley, Tyrone Hunt and Jay Tiefenthaler.
The award for the Best Outhouse went to Royal Flush, comprised of Brad Bartlett, Wade Greiman, Ryan Bakke, Miranda Rogers and Summer Rehkemper, all of Pleasant Hill.
The Iowa State Patrol team One More Time, comprised of Genie Clemens, Scott Miller, Vince Kurtz and Doug Cutts, all of Des Moines, claimed the Best Costume award.
Teams, composed of three pushers and one driver, construct their own outhouses. During the race, teams push the outhouses to a toilet where the drivers must clean off the toilet seat without using their hands. Then the drivers search for a corn cob buried in a cattle trough, change a roll of toilet paper and return to the outhouses where the teams push them back to the starting point.
