Hash Brown Heroes Named at State Fair

Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won First Place Overall with his Mr. Dells Mexi Cup Hashbrowns in the Cooking with Mr. Dells Hash Browns competition judged Monday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Phyllis Duncan of Des Moines earned Second Place Overall with Ham and Broccoli Quiche with Hashbrown Crust. Rita Johannsen of Des Moines claimed Third Place Overall with Sausage Hash Brown Bake.
Barton and Duncan’s entries also claimed first and second places, respectively, in the shredded hash brown class. Rita Johannsen earned third place.
Johannsen was also awarded third place in the Southern Style class.
In the O’Brien Hash Browns class Virginia Ogan of Osceola was awarded third place.
Entries were judged on taste, appearance and best use of Mr. Dells Hash Browns.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
