New State Fair Record Set in Giant Ram Contest

“Lover Boy,” a Hampshire ram exhibited by Daryl Mickelson of Mickelson Hamps in Perry, set a new Iowa State Fair record enroute to winning the 2011 Giant Ram competition.
The winning ram tipped the scale at 483 pounds, besting the old record of 479 pounds set in 1999.
Second place was claimed by “Hank” a crossbred shown by Kelly Hammen of Clarion. He weighed in at a very impressive 409 ½ pounds.
“Lover Boy,“ as well as the Big Boar and Super Bull will be on display at the Iowa State Fair in the Sheep, Swine and Cattle Barns respectively through August 21.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
