Fruit Combo Wins State Fair Preserves Title

Julie Coy of West Des Moines won First Place Overall with Cherry Rhubarb Preserves in the C&H Canned Preserves competition judged Tuesday, August 9, prior to the start of the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Both Second and Third Places Overall were awarded to Rod Zeitler of Iowa City for his plum and apricot preserves. Zeitler also captured the Sweepstakes award. Reserve Sweepstakes honors went to Robin Tarbell-Thomas of Centerville and Julie Coy of West Des Moines.
Preserves contain small, whole fruit or uniformly sized, medium-large pieces of fruit in a clear, heavy, slightly-jelled syrup. Preserves contain plump, tender fruit.
Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the recently-renovated Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21.
