Family Heirloom Recipe Earns Honors in State Fair Contest

Jennifer Bartles of Des Moines earned first place in the Family Heirloom Recipe Competition judged Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Second place went to Joyce Larson of New Market, and Marianne Carlson of Jefferson took third. An honorable mention was awarded to Kay Peterson of West Des Moines.
Entrants were required to submit their best from-scratch dish using a recipe prior to 1950. They also included a brief history of the dish or the person who gave them the recipe. Entries were judged on taste, history and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21.
