Edible Ugliness Earns Area Youth Ribbons in Iowa State Fair Ice Cream Contest
August 18, 2011
Claire Gilbert of West Des Moines and Tyler Davis of Johnston walked away with top honors in the ages 6 to 8 and ages 9 to 12 divisions, respectively, of the Ugliest Ice Cream competition judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Shelby Davis of Johnston took second in the ages 6 to 8 division while Joseph Baumhover of Woodward placed third.
In the ages 9 to 12 division, MacKenzie Becker of Pella took second and Julia Polson of Ankeny placed third.
Sponsored by Blue Bunny, the contest asked entrants to use anything edible, in addition to a half gallon of vanilla ice cream, to make the ugliest ice cream treat. Judges critiqued the entries on overall ugliness as well as creativity. The winning “ugliest ice cream” photos will remain on display for the duration of the Fair.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the recently-renovated Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
