Cookie Creations Crush Competition in State Fair Contest

Sasha McCoy of Hartford and Gia Capristo of Urbandale secured the top spots in the Decorate A Cookie contest judged Friday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. McCoy’s cookie earned first place in the ages 6 to 8 category while Capristo’s entry secured the blue ribbon in the ages 9 to 11 category.
Second place in the ages 6 to 8 class went to Grace Whitlow of Johnston, and Becca Youngers of Urbandale earned third. An honorable mention was given to Kate Youngers of Urbandale.
In the ages 9 to11 class, Gabby McCoy of Hartford was awarded second place.
Entrants were asked to bring their own edible decorations and were given 30 minutes to create their cookie masterpieces. Entries were judged on appearance and originality.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
