The best vegetable and fruit salsas were put to the test in the Salsa Sensations competition, judged Friday during the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
In the Fruit Salsa class, Susan Schultz of Haverhill earned first place. Second place went to Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines, and Suellen L. Calhoun of Des Moines captured third.
Riverside’s Kathryn Brenneman secured first place in the Vegetable Salsa class, while Cheryl Pike of Johnston was awarded second. Third place went to Schultz.
Entries were judged on overall taste, originality, uniqueness of flavor and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
