Carlson Takes the Cake in State Fair Red Velvet Contest

Iowa's top cake bakers competed Saturday in the Vera Towne's Traditional Red Velvet Cake contest at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Jefferson's Marianne Carlson took first place and a $250 cash prize, while Penny Murphy of Des Moines placed second earning her a $125 award. Third place and $75 were awarded to Indianola resident Heidi Blanchard.
Competitors were asked to create their own red velvet cakes from scratch complete with homemade frosting. Entries were judged on taste and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
