August 15, 2011
The Minnie Iowa Butter Sisters took the top prize in the Battle of the Butter contest held Friday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. The team, composed of Amy Haaland of West Des Moines and Andrea Asleson of Burnsville, Minn., won the blue ribbon for their butter sculpture which they constructed on-stage in only 30 minutes.
Also competing in the contest were the Butter Grape Ladies, composed of Eleanor Gilreath and Sarah Kritzer, both of West Des Moines, and the Texas Rangers, featuring Taylor Walker of and Tricianna Young of Runnells and Jodi and Kathy Darrah.
The Battle of the Butter is part of the festivities celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow. Teams of two to four sculptors compete daily for a chance to have their sculpture on display in the John Deere Agriculture Building, sponsored by Alliant Energy, alongside the 2011 Butter Cow. A $100 prize is awarded to the winning team each day. Judging is based on originality, creativity and use of butter.
