Butter Benders Win Big in State Fair Butter Sculpting Battle
August 15, 2011
The Butter Benders took first place in the Battle of the Butter contest judged Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. The team of Joseph's Jewelers employees Jill, Carissa, Keitha and Neal sculpted their award-winning butter statue in just 30 minutes on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage sponsored by Pepsi.
Also competing for butter glory were Bu-Bu-Butter, composed of Jennifer Campbell of Clive and Jean Maurer of Waukee, and Wright Way, featuring Deana and Alex Wright of Colfax.
The Battle of the Butter is part of the festivities celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow. Teams of two to four sculptors compete daily for a chance to have their sculpture on display in the John Deere Agriculture Building, sponsored by Alliant Energy, alongside the 2011 Butter Cow. A $100 prize is awarded to the winning team each day. Judging is based on originality, creativity and use of butter. The contest is held every day of the Fair at 4 p.m. on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage sponsored by Pepsi.
