Blue Ribbon Awarded to State Fair Cook in Olde Main Beer Competition

The rise of small breweries across the state is tempting cooks to find new and unique ways to utilize these tasty ales. The Cooking with Olde Main Beer competition, judged Monday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair, featured some of the best beer inspired creations.
Charlotte Struble of Ames won first place in the appetizers category. Christine Montalvo of Windsor Heights earned second place and Virginia Ogan of Osceola took third place.
In the bread class, Rebecca Howe of Des Moines won first place, Virginia Ogan of Osceola took second place and Steve Hoifeldt of Ames claimed third place.
Entries were judged on taste, creativity and easy of preparation.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
