Bird Callers Flock to Iowa State Fair to Beckon Feathery Friends

A cacophony of calls could be heard at the 2011 Iowa State Fair Thursday as the Duck Calling and Turkey Calling contests were held. Austin O’Day of Eldridge and Joe Routh of Mount Ayr were honored for their champion duck calling skills, while Dylan Webb of Osceola and Fred Scharbrough of Branson, Mo., received top honors in turkey calling.

The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
