Beginner's Luck Earns Top Honors for State Fair Competitors

Lori Hilgerson of West Des Moines earned First Place Overall in the Foods Department Beginner's Contest judged Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. Hilgerson's Blueberry-Peach Galette secured her the top prize.
Hilgerson also won Third Place Overall with her Greek Tilapia. Second Place Overall was awarded to Mason City’s Edith Blanchard for her Bacon, Onion and Oatmeal Bread.
The contest was open to adults competing in the Iowa State Fair Food Department for the first time. Entries were then judged on taste, appearance and originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
