Frequently Asked Questions

Who may apply for space?

Any individual (18 years or older), company, corporation, partnership, institution, etc., may apply for commercial exhibit or concession space at the Iowa State Fair. Iowa residency is not required.

When and where may a person apply for space?

Space applications are distributed and accepted starting in January for the coming Fair. Individuals wishing to receive an application may call 515/262-3111, Ext 205 or direct a written request to:

Space Rental Department
Iowa State Fair
PO Box 57130
Des Moines, Iowa 50317-0003

You may also download the application forms from this site.

Does everyone who applies get a space?

Unfortunately, no. The number of new applications received annually is far greater than available space. It is also true that many applications must be denied because of specific size and location requirements or because of late receipt of application. As a part of its responsibility in maintaining product balance on the Fairgrounds and as a means of encouraging new products, it sometimes becomes necessary for the Fair to deny space requests because too many vendors wish to exhibit or sell the same or related products.

When are applicants notified?

The process of assigning space and notifying prospective exhibitors goes on through the spring and summer as adjustments are made and as late cancellations are filled. In each case, however, a formal letter of acceptance or denial is sent as soon as final determinations are made.

If accepted, when are space payments due?

After acceptance, concessionaires and exhibitors are sent a space offer. This offer, along with the appropriate fees, must be returned to the Space Rental Office within the specified period stated on the offer. A cover letter sent with the space offer provides necessary additional information regarding other fees associated with participation.

Must I apply each year?

Yes, if you are not selected for this year's Fair. Space applications are not held for more than one Fair period; new applications must be submitted each year. This is because experience has shown that a majority of applicants either change their space requirements or change their minds about exhibiting a product line from one year to the next.

If my application cannot be accepted, should I try again next year?

Definitely, yes. Remember, each year presents new opportunity for prospective exhibitors and concessionaires. Circumstances change, new space sometimes opens up. If you are not accepted and have a question, contact the Concession and Exhibit Department for specific information. Click here for contact information.
